We uncovered a cluster of these things around 5 centimetres down in the soil of our garden. The object on the right is what was inside one of the objects on the left. The enlarged version of the photo rotates the image. In short. the thing with the tentacles was inside the purple sack ;) Any help is much appreciated. Cheers.

What in the world did we dig up?
May be a stinkhorn mushroom. Perhaps a Clathrus sp. I'm not positive though.
Biodiversity is a wonderful thing!
