Was I Supposed to cut back my Butterfly Flowers???

I have 2 Vanilla Butterfly Flowers, Butterfly Weed, Milk Weed, what ever you want to call them, anyway my question is - Am I supposed to cut the tree down before spring? I am in zone 8, and have looked every where for an answer to this question, and I have found nothing. My trees look very dead right now, but other people in my zone say they have come back beautifully, but nothing about if they pruned them, cut them back, or cut them down. Can some one please help???
