miniscule flying insect (smaller than a gnat)

New York, NY

This very tiny winged insect has been driving me crazy. I have thrown out 6 or 7 house plantsd and now
have only 4 left.. a corn draecena, spathyphyllum, anthurium scherzerianum, and a bird's nest ferm/
They are not flying near the plant. They tend to be near my computer, near water, and also in my bedroom
where there are no plants. This very tiny insect flies right at me. I control it b y hanging fly catchers all
over. I cannot seem to get rid of it. There is no food exposed anywhere in my apartment.
I am downloading some pictures I took which are enlarged. I hope someone can help. Thankis.

These look like fungus gnats in the family Sciaridae. The flies themselves are harmless nuisance pests, but their larvae sometimes can cause damage to very tender plants, feeding on roots and lower stems. They usually are found in very damp/water-logged soil having a high organic material content. The best control is to allow soil in potted plants to dry out as much as practical between waterings.
