Seed starting MAF 2014

ssg, they all should be fine. In fact I read that spinach germinates best at 50 degrees.
Got my soaked moonflower seeds ready for pots- five seeds, but might find more if I keep digging in the box.

Quote from typwc :
Today I started 'Black Prince' Snapdragon. My second year growing snaps and I'm not really sure I've got them figured out yet. I guess they like cooler weather? Last year the seeds I grew flowered in spring, sulked all summer and then bloomed again in fall. Looks like one or two of the plants may have actually survived most of the winter? Left me scratching my head.

I've had snaps that survived winter, actually 3 that survived many winters. Two of them died from disease last summer, though. I don't know why, but I suspect that the higher-than-average temperatures had something to do with it.

Thanks, Muddy. I thought they were annuals. Learn something new every year! :)

Because i got a slew of Snaps seeds from "birder"--I think--all different colors--
I really tried to grow them out. They were so puny as seedlings.
Planted the ones that survived in my beds--and they were totally obliterated
by all the faster growing, bushier plants.

Overall--It was a failure never to be repeated. I also think they do better in
cooler climes. And--also--yes, they can come back--sort of--as tender perennials.

WHY do I bother with seeds????? So much of it is so frustrating and time-consuming..
So SHE says--as SHE has trays and trays of seeds germinating.. Must be fun????

OH! Talking about seeds--How many of you remember that some years ago there
was talk about how Sphagnum Moss bits are a natural fungicide?
Sally--does any of this ring a bell with you?

Well--when that was the topic--I smithereened (rubbing between my hands) a lot of
it from my very dry, saved moss in a big bag, and am using it to cover all the surfaces
of all the seedling trays i use. Can't hurt!

typwc, the past few years I've been forgetting to plant some. One year I had Purple Majesty Millet growing in a pot surrounded by coleus and it was really nice. I have one seedling so far. I forgot how they seem to dart up quick. The seedling is pure green and about an inch tall already

typwc I have dozens of Amaranth seedlings the old seeds germinated very well

I'm so glad the bluebonnets came up. Hopefully you'll get blooms this season; if not, they might over-winter here.

The Gardener's Gold that I used in a couple of seed pots looks really wet. I'd cut it with a lot of something airy . I'll use this weeks Ace coupon to get the ''starter mix'' ssg likes. I'll save the Gardener's Gold for outside, and lighten it with bark.
