Cedar trees as trellis

We have 2 Dr. Seuss looking red cedar trees app 6-8 in in diameter that are 4 feet apart. Hurricane sandy removed the surrounding maples that shaded the cedars for years...only tiny puffs of green at the top. We considered cutting down these cedars but they are the most perfect bases for a trellis. If we kept them could they be used for a trellis? Should we cut off the tops of the cedars?

The cedars should make great bases for the trellis. Cedars are slow growing, so the diameter of the base won't change very much (enlarge). Why would you want to cut off the tops? They might actually grow better, and leaf out more, without the maple shading them.
