I have 2 acres of property in north florida. We visit the property only occasionally. This trip we have noticed a lot of tree limbs and small trees rotted and dead. Those trees that are dying have a growth on the tree. I'm wondering if this is a fungus and if so is there anything we can do to save future trees?
Those are typical fungi (like a mushroom) that will grow primarily on damage/diseased wood. I don't think they caused any damage, they just like to grow on weak wood. Trees and limbs are damaged in many ways, and thus parts or all of the tree will die. That's just nature. I have a feeling that here in the southeast, we will see lots of dead and damaged trees from the severe cold we have had this year, beginning in November.

Thanks Ken.... We noticed termite damage on some of the trees. Not sure if it's just the natural evolution of the forest or not but makes me nervous that I'm going to lose all the trees.
If you have concerns, you need to contact your local extension service people and have them recommend a forester for you. He/she can tell you what is going on with your trees and what, if anything, needs to be done to better your situation.
