I am wondering if Japanese maples would grow well under a not-too-dense stand of loblolly pines. I read this somewhere but want to verify. I would love to get one or two as an accent in the shady part of my yard, but I want to make sure that they'll actually grow well. My neighbors have one--their leaf color is beautiful!
(To clarify, these plants would get a little bit of direct sun but would primarily be shaded by the pines.)
Also, any particular varieties that I should choose, or other things to keep in mind?

Japanese maplesgrow in shade?
I've grown Japanese Maples and they do best in full sun to part shade. It doesn't sound as if they will receive adequate sun to flourish under those conditions. 'Bloodgood' is the variety I grew.
There are Japanese maples that need much more shade than others. There is an enormous range of japanese maples (Acer palmatum cultivars), so do some research to find a shade-lover, taking into account leaf size, leaf color, general habit, and ultimate size. Finding an online Japanese maple specialist would be a good idea - often their listings give these details, along with photos from different seasons. Have fun looking!
