I have many baptisia plants, all more than 5 years old. Twightlight Prairie Blues and others that are supposed to do well in zone 5.
I amend the clay ridden soil. They grow and spread, just very few blooms.
I cut them back to about 12" in the spring and also right after the few blooms are finished.
Should I not cut them back? They get lots of sun and some fertilizer.
Help.
Jo-
my baptisia doesn't bloom
Baptisias thrive in tough locations. Perhaps too much fertilizer since clay soil tends to hold on to nutrients and sometimes new growth is the result at the expense of blooms.
I either let mine go or cut back by about a third. I have heavy soil with some amendment.
