LOL Terri!!! You are sooooooooo darned funny!!
Your neck of the woods part 6 1/22/14
Thanks everyone, I have to pick a new project for my next series of classes. Eventually I want to make some SG boxes but I want to work on a few more panels first.
Critter hope you will be feeling better soon.
WOW Holly, how gorgeous! So so so so pretty.
Teri, Your not the only one that uses that trick, the only difference is if I'm taking too long to show her how to do it, she'll ask, "Can you come here a minute and show me how..." You'd have thought that by now I'd have figured out that I need to just put away what I'm doing first. Instead I end up out in the dark, trying to gather up my stuff and my job ends up on the "to finish" list. LOL
I agree, she did a lovely job on her SG panel, she is more patient than I am and her's always come out nicer than mine. She has everything fitted like a jig saw and I'm like, I want to see it together. There is no instant gratification in stained glass. LOL
Sally, We still have plenty of snow, would you like 2-3 tri-axles of it?

sorry about your snow R and H because I just read the forecast for the week and it is not going away much this week. It's cold for end of February , compared to average highs.
I 'should' have a project of finding and framing pictures for the walls but its not a job I like much, as anyone would see if they look at my walls.
Sally I love getting art for my walls, Getting it framed and hung up is a whole other story. I was trying to find something to give Ric at Christmas and dug out some water colors that we bought in Venice and a poster from that trip and had them framed and they are now hanging in the hall way, that trip was in 2002. There is still a good foot of snow on the ground here. It is receding along shoveled paths, near structures but it is at least a ft deep out in the middle of the yard.

Jamie is the proud owner of 2 new baby Pygmy goats. Last summer he took care of a neighbors goats and chickens and was promised a baby goat as payment. So we got a call yesterday saying to have Jamie come over and take his pick. Then this morning he went back and picked up another one. Goats are herd animals and you really should have more than just one. Here he is with one of them. JR thinks they are just wonderful.
fabulous!! Catoctin Zoo has pygmy goats, and they are just the cutest, even when full grown!
They are both little girls and if all goes well with these two he will probably breed them next year. I can see him with a small herd by next year.
Holly, doesn't Jamie live in town? Or, where does he keep the kids?
I love those pygmy goats. I've always planned on having a few, but as with a lot of my plans, this one is slated for when I retire. I see that pretty stained glass project hanging on the window in the background...
Coleup, Josh lives in town, Jamie lives about 3 miles from us and has 2 acres.
Aspenhill, I was thinking how nice the living room looks from that direction with the plants, shelf that Ric built and the windows. The other side of the livingroom doesn't look near as good with it;s mismatched furniture and walls in bad need of painting. LOL
Aaawwwww, that little goat is soooooooo CUTE!!!
goat envy here...
Here too Sally, but I will convince myself not to get a couple.
Mark is asking me about chickens....If you get chicks, how long before eggs? I need to find a book or site and read up, haven't done any research.. We'd probably do a chicken tractor..
Chicken tractors are great, good for the chicks and good for the soil.
Are they allowed in your town? Some areas have pretty strict regulations. I think it's a great idea!
Jan, more and more municipalities are allowing chickens every year, even in the heart of NYC.
I'm going the Beg Forgiveness route!!!.
It's a valid question, wouldn't want to spend too much money and get shut down. My immediate neighbors are pretty cool. --as long as I don't have a rooster, I think they won't even have a clue.
Sally--
Other than free eggs--what id your main motivation to have chickens?
Do they have other redeeming qualities?
Just asking.....G.
Eggs, cuteness, novelty, eating our leftover scraps.. We may need a reality check. I do need more understanding of what is needed.
Good to hear more areas are welcoming them!!! As a kid, I hated to gather eggs cuz I would get pecked. Hehehe
pecked, wait what? they won't like me stealing their babies and eating them?
I think the hens just didn't like being disturbed. Or else I wasn't gentle enough. Heehee. Maybe I should have warmed up my hand.
HAHAHA
Min size lot 40,000 sq ft unless new bill passes or you live in city of Annapolis!

Yes Sally, Do read up on them. There is a DG Poultry Forum. Lots of things to think about before you buy. If you want to get peeps in the spring (always so cute) they will need to be kept inside where it is warm and you can spend time holding them and getting them very tame. Then you won't get eggs till late summer or early fall. You can buy larger older birds and get eggs much faster but they are usually less tame and not near as cute. Other ?'s what size would you want there is a big difference in sizes of different breeds, and that includes the sizes of eggs. Some lay much larger eggs than others do. Some breeds will lay more eggs, just one a day but some breeds don't lay much in the winter and others do. Some lay different and beautiful colored eggs. There can be different temperaments in different breeds but if you get little ones and spend a lot of time holding them I don't think that makes much of a difference. Finding someplace to buy the peeps can be a problem. If you order on line and have them shipped you need order a minimum. That is so the little ones can keep each other warm thru the shipping process and you want to spend a few more $ to get sexed chicks, you will know that they are all girls. You may have a local store that will carry them and now is the time to ask if they will have them and what breeds they will get. They may order a specific breed if you let them know what you want. Tractor Supply and Agway and well as Feed Stores sell them in our area. I don't think anyone keeps backyard Chickens to save $$. You will spend more $$ setting up and feeding them than you will ever get in eggs but it sure is fun.
Sally, right by the Naval Academy Dairy Farm there is a natural food store and right next to that is a feed store that used to sell chicks and turkey and ducklings ...
Sally, here is an excellent site to start your research.

I'd choose ducklings over chicks if I could get the breeds that don't need anything more than a wading pool. The eggs are larger and said to contain more omega-3's and other amino acids.
Of course, I'd still need to build a pen and fence it.
We have been talking about getting a few ducks for years, they have quite a few really cute small breds. Of course I would need another water feature for the ducks. LOL
Sally< Use the link in the Orange band that says Chicken Breeds the one below that will take you to a stupid Google Add. Or just use this link to look at the Breeds.

Ducks are actually quite tasty as meat birds too.
Darius, that's what I was thinking too, duck is very yummy. Never had the eggs but I sure wouldn't mind giving them a try.
Jan, warm up your hand!? OK, farming lesson 101: You milk COWS, not chickens. ;)
thanks all, for all the help so far!!. We'll have to read up.
Re the article for Anne Arundel County. They want to require the manure is cleaned up every day. OK seriously? does anyone clean the chicken house or pen every day? c'mon..
There's a family in my neighborhood that raises a couple of hens in a tiny chicken coop. They have a small yard and the coop is right at the property line, so they're definitely not following all the county rules regarding backyard chickens. But the hens are so quiet and there is no smell!
With a tractor there should be no clean up necessary, unless you want to use it to make tea or somewhere else.
If I get the garden fenced I want to get Khaki Campbell ducks, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khaki_Campbell . I want them as much for pest control as eggs or meat. One reason duck is so tasty, is there is no white meat, being a flight fowl it is all muscle.
Southern States in Frederick was supposed to get chicks in this past week -- and probably did, we just didn't get over there to see them yet. They also have an assortment of pre-built coops and lots of information from staff.
