All of that makes for an icky day!! Here is the walkway to my truck. My frostweed plant is on the other side of the driveway, which is a big fat sheet of ice. Post your icky weather pics here!
Freezing Temps, Freezing Rain, Sleet, & Snow
Wow!! Pretty, but not good.
Yes, I know what you mean, I hate cold weather.
I moved south to get away from this! Maybe I didn't go far enough... :)
On the plus side, my experiment with using plastic sheeting to enclose the covered part of my back patio is keeping it at a steady 40 degrees. This is a much easier solution than dragging all of the cold sensitive stuff into the garage!
Hey, guys! I saw the weather maps. Stay warm as you can. It looks like this one is gonna last a while. I dont have snow but both the high and the low for today is 43. All the strong wind has blown half the leaves off my lovely leaf tree just as they were getting gorgeous. I was in Irving the year 1980 or 81 when we had an ice storm that immobilized the city and ruined a lot of trees. Hope this one is not as bad. Think hot chocolate and chili and no outside chores for a few days. Be safe everyone!
And after it refreezes into major ice ruts by tomorrow morning, you'll be using much worse words than "yucky".
I didn't go past the mailbox today but I still remember all those rush hour driving years pre-retirement when the streets would freeze over and the humongous four wheel drive truck idiots still thought they were immune to wrecking out because they had four wheels to spin instead of just two... Not.
I didn't get a chance to do any winterizing. Thinking my carnivorous plants and many cacti are gonners. I will be crying some tears when this all thaws out and I see the damage.
chuckl. I wont be sayin too much lest I break teeth saying it! Poor Newtons! You will lose those carnivorous plants for sure! Lots of winter to replan those plants! It was a sight to cringe at watching those tiny cars climb in and out of the ice ruts for sure, i saw a lot of plaztic pieces imbedded in the ice on the roads.
Cheryl, I really hope that is not the case. I remember what Dec 2009 looked like in my yard. It looked like black rags hanging everywhere.
I guess it will be an experiment in hardiness. I am not sure all the plants will die but some certainly will. I tried to explain this to my husband in terms of dollars but I can't really explain how neglectful I feel about my little friends. The number of plants I have are worth many hundreds of dollars as most of you know from your own collections but some are fairly rare and I will miss them all if they go...
Yes, I understand, I love my plants too, and I am very attached to them.
We wouldn't put so much work into them if we weren't attached to them I can never predict what I'm going to loss many times I'm wrong.
I had planned to let my cacti and agaves fend for themselves this winter as a sort of natural selection for the most robust varieties, but I just couldn't do it when I saw how low the temperatures are going to get. I've been known to nurse along plants that I don't even want because I feel bad about letting them die, and it is even harder with plants that I actually like. :)
I just hope the greenhouse door stays shut. lol The door lock jammed a few days ago, I crawled through a window to get in, demolished the lock to open the door, Mother went to the hospital (doing well now), and I have the hole in the door full of Walmart bags and two electric heaters turned on. I don't have much left that's tender, but there are some recently purchased daylilies that don't need to be exposed to extremely low temps while in pots. Que sera, sera. I'm going to toss another log into the fireplace and hope for a sunny day tomorrow!
Day lilies won't care, even in pots.
I did not think so either until I lost a bunch of new daylilies in pots one cold winter a few years ago. They had come from Florida in late fall, and the ones this year are from Georgia. The sales I can't resist seem to come really late in the season. I'm probably erring on the side of caution this time, and so far the greenhouse has stayed shut. Tomorrow I may have a chance to put a new knob on the door and properly close it
Note to self BACK LIT don't really work on Icicles
Yes Grits, these have been the coldest and most boring days we have had in a long time.
Thank God for the electricity and gas for light and heat, food in the pantry, and the web to keep us entertained, and of course many other things, too numerous to mention.
I feel very thankful, but yes, I am bored and need to get out there.
I know about the boredom thing DW wants to go to Walmart now mind you this is a lady that hates winter driving in any form and the nearest walmart is 40 miles away So she is getting cabin fever really bad
Well, I guess she better not try it yet, maybe by midweek.
We went out today because I needed laundry detergent, distilled water, and paper towels. Getting to & from Wal-Mart was easy peasy, but navigating INSIDE W-M was a different story! There was no milk, no laundry detergent except powdered varieties and Tide liquids. The produce section was almost wiped clean. Basically, everything was picked over because they've not had a delivery since Thursday of last week.
Wow! I guess I was lucky we went shopping last Saturday.
It was also the first friday of the month and paychek time for those on gov't chex- always a BAD weekend. The roads are closed so we cant get stuff in and out of the area without coming thru the deep south, if we get there- the warehouses arent open to load us to get freight because the guys werent walking the ice to work. Going to be a L o n g week.
My daughter's school was closed again today. Hopefully the big melt starts today.
Yes I hope so, I am so tired if staying inside, at least the sun is shining today, which is a lot more cheerful.
Went to a local park this morning to try for some critter pics* and found that of the three lakes I checked on the property, all were frozen to at least some depth. I didn't check the other lakes on the property (4 or 5 more down in the back of the tract) but assume they were also frozen over... A few ducks tried to land and they all went skidding along on their butts before regaining their composure and taking off again. Not terrible out there though as I wore my Walls outdoor overalls and a light shirt jacket and actually got too warm after walking not that far...
*Although I usually say that I'm going to see the wildlife and take more pics, that's really the excuse I give myself to make me get out and walk for some needed exercise. Otherwise, I'd be pretty much a slug during really cold weather such as we've had in the last week.
Steve
I know how you feel, I am so tired of ice, I don't think I have ever seen ice last this long around here before.
I am ready for spring and it is early December!
I agree Dennis. I am fine as long as I don't have to worry about it killing my plants again!
I had most of my fall garden covered so it survived fairely well two cabbages were covered two were not,I can't tell much diference in them.... Cabbages must be really tough The collards that were un covered are dead
Late to the ice rink....LOL! Glad everyone made it through safe.
My potted plants are in the shop safe and warm but due to neglect of not filling jugs with water before the ice box hit, some are history. However, when we turned the water on, I forgot to check the faucet in the utility sink and it overflowed because of newly potted plants in the sink, they tipped over and the soil clogged the sink sending water over the edge for about an hour. I had a cat litter pan in there for some feral cats I am housing right now and it sure made a mess on the floor.
The leaves and ice on the pond net got so heavy it almost sunk. We had to pull it off and empty it to keep the water surface from freezing.
On the day it started sleeting I was trying to help my son move into a new apartment. We started to his apt. to secure his lease and get the key. He begin to have some sever pains, had to take him to emergency and found he was trying to pass a kidney stone. With pain meds and other meds they gave him he was good to go; we got the key, then unloaded one load. After getting the second load in the car, we couldn't unload because of ice. It sat in my garage loaded and he was stuck here for three days! I couldn't wait to get him moved.
I am with you Dennis, I hate cold and ice. In my next life I want to be in the tropics!
Hi, Sheila, Happy Holidays! What is a pond net?
Oh my Goodness, I am so sorry about all the trials and tribulations, but glad you and your son are o.k.
That cat box getting flooded must have been quite a pleasure to clean.
LOL! Well it wasn't the whole litter pan just where they threw it out, thank goodness. However, with the dirt and vermiculite that floated up with the plants it was a blooming mess!
Marty I have a 750 gallon fish pond that has a skimmer and waterfall. If I let too many leaves and acorns from a tree above it fall, it has to be emptied daily. Plus those that get caught in rocks or plants will sink and cause more frequent cleaning of the bottom. I don't do that but about every two years if I net it. The net is just a 1/2 " space green fabric that I can still see through but leaves will stay on top. I stretch it over the surface and put rocks on it to hold it in place.
