I have 3 young trees, a red maple and a dogwood with trunks 6" in circumference just under the lowest branches and 8" at the base, and a second dogwood that is smaller - maybe 6" at the base.
The red maple and one dogwood are in an open location and receive morning sun from the southeast. The other dogwood is in a somewhat sheltered location and gets afternoon sun from the northwest.
Last winter, I wrapped the trunks with a crepe paper-like tree wrap even though the arborist said it wasn't necessary. I've wrapped them again, but wonder if I should have. My only hesitation is that the wraps might cause fungi to grow on the trunks.
protecting young trees against sunscald
no need to wrap them
Thanks, Wha.
