My Brown Turkey fig looking splendid this year in golden plumage.
This tree is about 40 years old and has died to the ground a few times. Still it keeps going and rewards us with fruit and beauty.
Fall Color in my yard, Show us yours.
fall color is just beginning here. Give me a couple more weeks. Your fig is lovely. Mine lost its leaves instead of turning color. This year I purchased a fothergilla, a maple-leaf viburnum and got an oak leaf hydrangea in trade so Im hoping for more fall color as they begin to grow.
Mine doesn't always turn golden, sometimes the leaves just get fried and fall off, this was a very lucky year.
That is really lovely Marty, I love the colored leaves on the mulch, they look so pretty, and of course I leave them there to add to the mulch layer.
I got from Dennis at the RU a Rhus aromatica and I traded for a sassafras hoping for more fall color in the future. The fall color seems to depend on a lot factors for the display.
Oh, Im glad to know your little mitten tree is turning color. I really love it but Ive had a difficult time getting a cutting to make it or even seedlings Ive dug from my sister's little thicket.
I would like to have some of the colorful smooth sumac but my sister is extremely allergic to it and she comes here often so I'll settle for the one that is hypoallergenic.
My spice bush turns a beautiful yellow but I think I have it in shade that is too deep. It never gets many leaves and it seems to lose them as quickly as they turn yellow in the fall.
marti, glad to see i'm not the only one whose fig just defoliates. Never even knew they could display such pretty fall color. Mine is Celeste and has been bare since the first true cold snap in early oct.
I have no color to speak of. On my list is to get 1-2 sumacs one of these days. I think they do turn red in this area.
I do have lots of tazetta daffies that will likely put on a show in mid Dec.
Nery, Fall doesn't get to my place until December and I think you are South of me so maybe it's not time just yet for us.
That is very possible, the two of you are lucky to have the warmer temps longer, but fall comes to you later.
Very nice Marty and Vosner, those are lovely.
Since we live in the post oak belt, we get very little color, although some trash trees do get yellow, and a couple vines turn bright red.i have been freezing in Stephenville for the last few days, and may have missed getting any pics. I did snag a pic of my little persimmon tree though. Here the only color I am seeing is crystal, like this prickly pear.
Wow! the ice on that Prickly pear is amazing!.
That's a great pix Joy of the prickly pear. I have to go look up where Stephenville is. I love your little persimmon tree. I think you should get some more so you will have color.
I would love another persimmon tree, I think I will try and get one this winter at one of the MG sales.
This is actually our neighbor's Crepe Myrtle tree, but it hangs over our driveway, so I tell her we have shared custody of it! LOL
Trees down my street, mostly oaks.
My oak tree and close up of the leaves.
The smallest cowpen daisy ever. Believe it or not, it's still blooming. That will change after today, though.
Joy, be sure to get a non astringent persimmon such a Fuyu, so you can eat them while they are firm.
The astringent ones such as Tamopan which is the one we have can not be eaten until they are totally mushy, and that takes the fun out of it, although they are still delicious.
Here is a picture of mine as it is right now, it is about 40 years old, and at least 25 feet tall.
Very nice Stephanie.
Thanks Josephine, the little one is a Fuyu, and I will plan on getting another. Oh my 25' tall, I won't be picking those. LOL
Well, the ones at the top we leave for the birds, although the squirrels like them too but they help themselves to all of them, they have been chewing and throwing them around for while now.
In the end whichever ones are left come splattering down and fall on the mulch, making a big mess.
Awesome tree! Were you into natives back then or did that come later?
Gorgeous! I love all the yellows, oranges, reds, rusts, and maroon colors I'm seeing around town.
Yes, they are all beautiful!!!
Ohio was a bit cool for colors- those have faded- this is Fairview, Ohio over by WV when you guys were getting iced in Stephenville. The storm showed definite altitude snowlines here.
Very nice Pictures Kitt.
marti, that is so beautiful. Looks like a calendar pic with the blue bench. I was lamenting several posts ago about lack of color but you were right. It was just a bit too soon. Colors are very nice now. I am not a fan of Bradford pears, but there is a row of 20 trees along Hwy 99 and the are bright red--absolutely stunning. DH and I have come to the conclusion that "normal" summers will lead to some color in our zone 9. Last year and this year we actually have fall color.
Now I'm busy covering stuff. brrrrr!
Nery, Ive been wondering what the secret is for getting fall color. 2012 I had the best color ever. This year we had a lot more rain in the Spring and I wondered what that might do to the fall colors. Thanks for the compliments on my tree. I just love it. Hope you are staying warm. It is really cold here.
Very lovely Marty, I love the colored leaves on the ground.
Sugars cause the colors, cold spells of certain degrees and certain lengths cause the color to set bright and dulls, having enough water during the growing season helps the leaves to be tender to that cold, dry weather just lets them dry on the plant...i forget where I learned thaat
Here is a good explanation of the genesis of fall leaf color.

Great thread. Can you suggest where I can get these beauties - Chinese Tallow and Brown Turkey fig. How do they fair in rest of the year?
Very nice postings. Jamper
