False Widow?
It's a harmless orb weaver in the genus Zygiella - see http://www.uksafari.com/zygiellaxnotata.htm for an example. And false widows are not nearly as dangerous as some of the press accounts would have one believe...
ahh thank you for your reply.
I'm not really fussed about this so called "invasion" of the false widow. I find it rather interesting to be honest. I'm just worried for my daughter, being so young if she did get bitten....
Is there a way to deter spiders from homes?
Short of hermetically sealing your home and surrounding it with a pesticide barrier, there simply is no way of preventing the occasional uninvited 'drop-in' house guest from entering. I suggest instead educating your daughter on the role that spiders play in the environment and that they should be observed and not played with. When I was about four years old, I picked up one of our native false widow spiders and received an extremely painful bite in return - it was many years before I would touch another spider!
