I like the PINK the best - not really, I've just heard Sally say before how much she dislikes the pink LOL. I don't really have a preference one way or the other, although white looks nice against red brick - but I haven't paid attention to the dirty look Gita is referring to as the blooms fade.
Mid Atlantc Plant Shopping #4 End of season 2013
I also think white would look best against brick! I enjoy all the colors, including pink. ;-) Red is probably my favorite. Still unknown what color my crape myrtle baby is, but I don't think I'll find out next summer--no buds have formed on it yet!
Catmint, crape myrtles bloom on new wood, so the buds won't form until next year. You might get blooms after all!
My crape myrtle's a deep red, which is ok, but it's such a strong dark color that it clashes with anything else in the red/pink family. I had to transplant all the pink and lavender phlox far away from the crape myrtle. The phlox bloomed at the same time and even had similar flower shapes as the CM, but the colors clashed terribly. I never thought about coordinating colors until last year and thought it was silly to plan by color, until I noticed how much an impact a flower color can have.
Sally, there were still trees left at 50% off at my local HD yesterday. I didn't get to see what they were, though.
thanks, SSG. That is interesting about the red color being hard to coordinate with. What did you end up planting with it?
Not my favorite plant but I do like the very dark leaved ones like 'Plum Magic' etc.
Sally Local HD has three 3 gal pots of a dark leaved Crape labeled 'pink' I believe it to be this one
http://www.monrovia.com/plant-catalog/plants/3402/pink-velour-crape-myrtle.php
$4.99 each They are about three feet high and two wide. Let me know if you or anyone would like me to snag these. ( I have to go back there this afternoon) Also, Ace Hardware may have a Natchez (white) as listed way above for approximately $6.
Catmint, I think it's because my CM is such a deep dark red that anything pastel-y just didn't look right next to it.
My 'Arapaho' is actually much redder than pictured here: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/259733/#b
There are now yellow daylilies and white phlox ('David') that bloom at the same time, and spring and fall bloomers of various colors.
LOL Coleup--I love that 'pink' crape myrtle--I mean, what more info could anyone need? ;-) Sort of reminds me of the 'regular shrub' from several weeks ago.
but wow, $4.99 sounds like a great price for a 3-foot tree!
SSG, the yellow daylilies and phlox David sound like they would be lovely with it!
I think I need to wait to see what color mine is before deciding where to plant it, once it's big enough...

Good point about white. Purple sounds nice, anything that blooms will be a big improvement. They won't be up against the brick, but in an area with a four foot concrete wall. We're getting a brand new outside sign, but not until July (new fiscal year) so I'm hoping there are plantings around that too. Areas around the existing entrances and sign look all trampled, as if kids tend to hang on the sign , sit on the walls, and loiter right where I'd think you want flowers. The landscaping is seriously horrible and depressing, overgrown or hacked to a grotesque stub. Many of the trees are 50 yr old pines that look like something out of DR seuss. LOL. and I can't see many other good places for putting anything. There's no money in the budget for planters. Anything less than huge will probably get stolen or knocked over. GIven all that, her idea of a blooming crepe is a good one. WHy didn't I think of it first?
4.99 ?????? Hell's yeah, as my kid would say... LOLOL
Coleup, at that price please go ahead and grab two pink HAHA Velours and one Natchez if you don't mind. I'm sure my co workers will support this tiny investment, and I and Megan will get them planted somewhere on the property. Wherever Ms Manager likes…
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good thing I checked back here Sallg. I'm off to procure them on my way to picking up bags of shredded leaves on my route. (OPLs)
FYI......there's a co-op about to start with great prices on Atlas gloves.

Took my camera to work today--as, once again, I was watering
everything for 3 hours. There was a chilly wind--but it warmed up later.
I took a couple more pictures of the Azalea Gerard. I posted the tag earlier of the Fuchsia one. Seems they also come in Scarlet. $29.98 ea.
Also--for you Holly lovers--There were only two bushes of an amazingly variegated
Holly--all yellows and whites and some green too. Real compact leaves..very pretty!
It was called "False Holly ........."--I will post a picture. A bit pricey---$39.98.
I have to tell you what amazing products the new providers are bringing!!!
We are all pretty impressed--"All" being anyone that cares for gardening.
The others would not have a clue!
1--Here is the Azalea Gerard tag--posted this already.....
2--Here are 6 large bushes (fuchsia) just sitting there...There are a couple that are "Scarlet"...
3--The tag for the "False Holly "Goshiki". Pricey--at $39.98. We only had two.
4--A closer look at their leaves. Very different and pretty. It was too much sun for picture taking.
5--Tried a photo of the whole Holly bush-but the sun was a killer....I stood in front of it
to shade it a bit--but it was not much better....Can you see my shadow?
I liked the Holly---very intersting..... Gita
The picture with your shadow is really cool!
thanks lots Gita- between this and the discussion of Mahonia Soft Caress, I have a lot for a December topic, just in time== New evergreens for home landscaping.
Sally: That's a great topic! Can you also note which (if any) can handle some shade? Dry shade would be even better, but I know that's a reach!
Wellllll, here's my concept- I go find maybe a couple more 'new ' plant selections and then give a profile of each. My motto is 500 words and done . But I'll certainly keep eyes open for both of us for dry shade evergreens!
Monrovia is going to start mail order
http://www.monrovia.com/plant-catalog/
In the summer I could care less about evergreens. But in the winter it is so nice to see a little green in the yard! And new and different would be nicer still.
Sally--
I will be at the HD tomorrow--as it is our annual Thanksgiving dinner pig-out.
If it is not sunny--I will try to get some better pictures. When the sun is shining
on a shrub--it comes out all bleached. That is why I tried to shade it with my shadow,,
We have some beautiful plants! One is a trailing (?) golden something....(Cypress??)
How far is your closest HD? They may have all the same things. Then you can take
your own photos as you like them.
NO takers yet on the camellias....a couple of them have unopened buds on them.

Don't know if anyone is interested in a co-op here. Very easy site to join. Great prices, I think, if you're COMFORTABLE with the process
http://allthingsplants.com/thread/view/21431/Interest-Thread-Atlas-Gloves-Co-op/#new_post
I gave away a lot of gloves this past year... might need a few more for next season. thx for the link! i'll also check into the link on that thread for garden club discounts, in case there's interest at our winter seed swap.
Gita, love love that variegated foliage!
I love the Atlas gloves - we buy them by the dozen and we happen to be well stocked so I won't need the co-op -- but just wanted everyone to know they wash really well (we wash them on warm and don't use the dryer but they do dry very quickly).
Love that variegated False Holly! Its light requirement is from full sun to deep shade. Works for me :-). I probably should plant some around the property to keep deer away.
There are currently 15 False Holly at my local HD for $40 each. Will keep an eye ot to see if they get reduced nearer to holidays.
Donner, dmail me your # reminder!
If anyone does the Atlas glove coop, I would buy a pair or two at Seed or Spring swap. They are nice. Thanks for thinking of us Roses!
Deep shade for false holly? WOW!
They are lovely, but until I get more of my potted plants into the ground, I have to pass unless the price drops really really low.
Home Depot Mountain ROad Glen Burnie had a bunch of them
There are dark leaved varieties of False Holly, too.

This site says Goshiki does well in sun and deep shade:

I haven't bought any poinsettias yet this year. Most of what I've seen this year don't look as "robust" as I like to see them. Rockwell has a deep pink one that has lighter shades of pink splashed across the bracts that is just lovely. Visiting their web site proved fruitless, it hasn't been updated since Poinsettia 2012.
Ric, Wayne and I went to Homestead Gardens Sunday. They have huge displays of themed trees. A new one this year was a Gardeners Tree which featured seed packet ornaments and a garland of a lite weight chicken wire! Tree stand was a modified watering can. It was surrounded by upside down tomatoe cages strung with lights.
Their pointsettias were very nice and robust. It was nice to see large pots (3+' x 3+') These large pots were all footed with pots of a lovely variety of Christmas Helleborus called 'Jacob'...lots of white upward facing blooms. Nice.
Ric--
I picked up two of the 99cent ones that HD sells early on Black Friday.
They have the best blooms of all the ones that cost more.
We got in 6 carts (I think 950 pots) and sold out by 9:30AM.
People come and buy them by the cart-full.
I was "in" at 8AM. There was a cart still semi-full at the service desk.
That is where I grabbed my two.

Gita,They are just grand! Sounds like they had some neat displays Judy. One of my favorite displays I started was to take 3 empty cable spools, about a 4', a2.5', and a 18" one. I'd stack them so I had about a 6' tall, round shelves. I'd then fill it to the floor, with alternating poinsettias and white Christmas caladiums. It was just so Wow! we could barely keep it stocked. Many customers bought 3-4 so they could do a grouping at home. The manager loved it, he'd walk around with a $ twinkling in his eyes.LOL As a florist and gift shop almost all our plants had a minimum of 100% mark up.
