Hi All, please can you help indentify? it's been growing over the last week. Also, what is the light brown residue / staining, on the ceiling, next to the spider?

Appears to be a female orb weaver of some kind - what is your geographic location? The brown 'stain' likely is its egg sac...

thanks- I'm in the UK, about 50 miles North of London.

Might be Metellina segmentata, a long-jawed orb weaver - see http://www.edderkopper.net/Bilder/Tetragnathidae/metellina%20segmentata%20female%204%20febr%20600.jpg for an example. The abdominal colour pattern of this species is highly variable.
