I realize there are probably a lot of black beetles out there... and most probably look alike. But here's a try anyway... this one is in a southern California high desert... about 1" long. No identifying markings.

It's a darkling beetle (family Tenebrionidae); looks like an Eleodes sp. - see http://nathistoc.bio.uci.edu/coleopt/Eleodes%20acuticauda.htm for an example (likely not the same species as yours)...
