Tons of these in my compost bin in Southern California. There's a really fat brown widow spider in there that loves sucking them dry. I wonder what insect is laying the eggs in there? I usually only see small winged insects around the bin; but these larva are an inch long!
CLOSED: "armored" larva in my compost
Larva (maggot) of a soldier fly (family Stratiomyidae); harmless scavengers.
Excellent; I knew I saw "wasps" flying around there!
Thanks!
