This cocoon was formed between two Gardenia leaves. It was hard and had a chalky appearance. The base was covered with shiny threads which makes me think it's a moth of some sort.

looks like Giant Silk moth cocoon to me too.
It looks like you're at least in the right family there with Saturniidae. Maybe I'll cage it in spring and see what happens. Thanks for the help!
