Gisela, AZ

A friend found these in a barn. We live in the woods of payson AZ. They are rather large and tan.. very long leggs. It looks like an egg sack but it appears tp be theire body and they shoot webbs out of it. I've never seen anything like it and they're scary looking!

These are harmless orb weavers in the genus Araneus...

We have had a lot of orb weavers in the garden this year their colors vary a lot. I have had light brown and dark brown ones and some of the dark brown ones even have black designs on the large bodies. Some come out at night and others are hanging in their webs during the day. I watched a rather large one kill a praying mantis which I thought was unusual. Usually the praying mantis will kill the spiders.
