The only big moth I've seen here in my area is the hummingbird moth, but all the pics I find show a green larvae. Bug Files doesn't have pics of all the types so I can't compare. If anybody can identify this guy they are welcome to use the pic in the Bug Files forum.
CLOSED: Which hornworm?
Likely Hyles lineata (white-lined sphinx moth. Caterpillars of this species can vary wildly in color patterns. See http://www.whatsthatbug.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/hyles_lineata_cat_arizona.jpg for an example.
