http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=9655999 shows a Painted lady dorsal view but ID's it as an American lady.
This butterfly is a Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) , the black gear shaped mark on the inner part of the forewing above is not broken which it is in American lady. Also there is no small white dot in the orange outer part of the forewing which the American lady has
