We seem to have quite a few of these webs around our house - by the deck steps and on the ceiling of the front porch. We are concerned that they may be black widow webs (I was reading an article in the newspaper yesterday about black widows.) Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
Black Widow Spider Web?
Looks more like a funnel weaver web (family Agelenidae) - black widow webs tend to be more diffuse as well as more hidden...
Thank you. This was really helpful.
I've had dozens of black widows around our house for years. They seem to like a hot (sun warmed) place, near the ground. Their web is usually not very big or extensive. And it feels very, very strong when you touch the strands. And their egg masses have a certain look too.
Once you've had some, you start to get a feel for them, so to speak!
