Embarrassed to say I have never grown anything from seed. Nothing that I recall anyway! Dear friend gave me viable seeds for a Hesperaloe parviflora (Red Yucca) and I have no idea where to begin.
She also gave me seeds for something she calls a "Moonvine." With the vine, she claims you just have to place the seeds where you want the vine. Another source claims you need to soak the vine seeds two days prior to planting.
Any advice would be most appreciated. Thank you.

This is an older post so not sure if you got info about it elsewhere.
The pod for the moonvine does not look like a vine seed. My Moonflower, datura has seed pods like those. It is very easy to grow. Just make sure the ground is warm. You can soak the seeds if you want to for 24 hours before planting them. I have a moonflower in a pot that I bought at a nursury. The pods explode and they sortof plant themselves next to the mother plant with no soaking or special care.
I grow my common yucca from seed.It has white flowers. I just planted a bunch in a pot last year and barely covered them with soil. They are slow to grow but germinate pretty quickly with no special care. The pods I got this year I put the seeds between wet paper towels and put the towel in a ziploc bag and placed it on the fridge. I kept checking it and soon there was one that had a small plant starting. I did this just for fun and since it is getting chilly outdoors I poked it into a houseplant pot I had another plant in. I checked the plant pot and it is doing fine, still a little sprout, but thriving inside for now. I obviously am not going to keep it indoors, or in a pot. But just wanted to watch its progress.
So neither seed is too hard or fussy.
Thanks Windy! I still haven't germinated anything yet, and really appreciate your advice. It is my understanding that Datura self sows well. I got the pods from a friend trying to get rid of all hers!
The Yucca are more of an experiment.
Really appreciate your input! Thanks.
Peace~

Hi again! Back to the supposed Moonvine must be a Moonflower...... I apologize. When I started on DG I was strictly cactus/succulents. Gathering seeds and taking cuttings from friends ( and strangers ;) ). Is my attempt at exploring the kinder, gentler side of gardening. I was a novice then. Still a novice. Not sure if I'll ever get this down. I'm trying.
Yeah for Moonflowers!

Moonflower is a confusing name as it refers to more that one unrelated plant. If it's a long vine I'd suspect it to be Ipomoea alba, which is a night flowering Morning Glory. If that is what it is and it's like other Morning Glories it naturalizes WAY too easily. Meaning that once it goes to and they scatter can spend the next 50 yes fifty years pulling seedling.
Ipomoea Alba is a large seed. Those are datura in the picture.
I have always found the moonflower vine very hard to grow. I guess it really matters what zone, and my zone is too short for most things to become invasive
