Swept up a pile of these in the basement.

Bristol, CT

Swept up a pile of these in my basement and also found in my river rock landscaping. We've sprayed the Orkin stuff from wally world, but wonder what these are and what kills them.

Thanks,

pfan

Can you try to get a better photo? maybe using macro setting or at least a magnifying glass?

This is my zoom on the pc. My camera was pretty much on the floor on macro setting.

Since I cannot see them very well in the photo, can you use your much younger eyes to look up images of Springtails/Collembola (look on Google Images).

In your photo they look quite small; I'm sure they are not termites; I think boring beetles would look larger than what you have in the photo.

If you cannot get an answer here, did you save some of them so you can take them to a local exterminator for identification? or to your county cooperative extension service?

EDITED to add this link to Bugspray.com with more info; note the part where others have swept up piles of these insects in their basement. (I have no connection to Bugspray.com)
