There are about twenty of them resting on my ferns. Can someone identify them for me? Thanks. Oh that's our black cat in the background :)

Soldier flies are 'good insects' and they spend a lot of time resting; their larvae can break down compost faster than anything.
These are not even flies, let alone soldier flies. They are in the order Hymenoptera, appearing to be sawflies of some sort in the suborder Symphyta.
