A friend of mine stays in Highland Park, Michigan and she photographed this huge insect. My guess is it's a grasshopper, just don't know what type.

It's a grasshopper in the genus Melanoplus, it appears to be Melanoplus differentialis. one of the larger species in that genus - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Grasshopper_at_MGSP.jpg
