Early this morning on my way to the mailbox, I noticed this insect on a morning glory leaf. I have never seen one before. What is the purpose of that whip like appendage? TY.
What is this handsome 6 legged, winged creature?
This is a wasp in the family Ichneumonidae, this is a huge family with thousands of species, all of which are parasitic on insects and other arthropods. The long appendage is its ovipositor, used to insert its eggs into its prey.
Thank you so much, Flapdoodle. You know the "bugs" and I kind of thought this was a beneficial one.
