Photo 3 and 4 are of a Latticed Heath moth I believe, photos I and 2 are of a similar moth but I cannot identify. Anyone help. Thanks
2 different moths?
Nice photos! I don't know anything about European lepidoptera but they don't look like the same species. Although in some species there are color variations, the pattern looks very different.
Thanks gardenkate, I agree they look too different to be the same. Hopefully someone can identify.
I now think this is another "heath moth" but still struggling to identify which one. Found a photo on internet of orange heath moth which looked similar but slightly darker, but cannot find any other reference to such a moth. Not sure it exists.
I've been mulling this one over for some time. I am not familiar enough with the range of variation in the wing pattern of the latticed heath to rule it out, but I will point out that moths in the genus Ematurga can also be very similar in appearance - http://lh5.ggpht.com/-fFaQ0QJYCdc/Thl8AyrUpjI/AAAAAAAAH-0/6oljCiulroA/s1600-h/common-heath%25255B2%25255D.jpg
Had looked at Common Heath Moth but the pattern seems a bit fuzzy/floury, not quite sure how to describe it.
