I live in SW Ohio and I've looked through every spider ID guide and can't find this spider. He was at least 5 inches, brown hairy looking body, not hairy legs though.. They were striped legs red towards the body. I've never seen something so scary looking!!
It's an orb weaver, either an Araneus or Neoscona sp. All orb weavers are harmless to humans.
