Is anyone able to identify the insect living in the picture I am uploading. The first two are taken on 08-17-13 and the second are on 08-19-13. It is located on the trunk of the tree. I have only noticed some ants around the area and one other small bug, but I am not sure if this is there or if I should worry about an infestation.

I live in minnesota
No worries about an infestation; not completely sure, but this most likely is either a moth cocoon (http://www.biolib.cz/IMG/GAL/85797.jpg) or a spider egg case (http://bugguide.net/node/view/373057/bgpage); a third (but much less likely) possibility is a fungus-like organism known as a slime mold (http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8151/7472733606_0ebae2ac09.jpg)
BTW, is there still a golf course at Dilworth? I remember hacking away on it along with a couple of other entomology students from NDSU back in the early 1960s...
There is a golf course near dilworth and I think one around glyndon. Thanks for the help too.
