tulip poplar and surrounds

Burgettstown, PA

hi all,
i planted a tulip poplar about 5 yrs ago. it is very beautiful and seemingly happy, but the surrounding plants, esp. the elderberry and the red raspberry seem to be unhappy.
the elderberry has large beautiful blossoms, but then the berries either don't develop or fall before ripening. the raspberries are just shriveling.
i have "limbed up" the tree, lowest branches about 8ft up, so there is still plenty of light.
i'm very curious about other's experience with the yellow poplar. i suspect there is some allelopathy at work here, but, all info I've found claims the poplar is a victim, not a perp. of it.
any comment appreciated.

p.s. ants seem to love it and something is enjoying the leaves, alot!

An image of your situation would speak...well, maybe thousands of words?

It doesn't sound big enough to be the issue, but trees can be thirsty and possibly depriving your fruiting shrubs of sufficient moisture to support complete fruit maturation.

I don't believe you have an allelopathy issue there. Those species are all cohorts in eastern North America.

Ants are happy farming piercing/sucking aphids up in your Liriodendron foliage, where they produce copious honeydew (aphid poop) which has abundant sugar content. There are more than a few foliage feeders on this species, as it is a host plant for a number of larval stages of winged beauties.

thank you for your response. guess moisture might be the source of the difficulties. really don't mind the bugs.

My one elderberry has never fruited well, doing as you describe, and recently I have read they do much better with cross pollination. Though they are not rare here, I don't know that any others are near enough.
