I purchased some Stargazers and a few other lilium bulbs that were discounted because they were sprouting. Some have just started to sprout and others have sprouted 2 - 3 inches.
Can I cut off the sprouts and put them in dark, cool storage for later planting?
Can I put the bulbs sprouts and all in dark, cool storage to stop the process?
Do I have to hurry and plant them right away and leave the sprouts out of the ground?
Any other advice?
Thanks for your help.
Sprouting Lilies
Since I didn't get any response...here's what I did.
Dug the hole, planted the entire thing sprout and all, covered them with dirt and look forward to blooms next year. If I remember...I'll post and let you know how they turned out.
Happy digging :)
I'm sorry you didn't get any responses either, Deb. Had I known what to do I'd have posted. Do let us know how it works out for you. Wishing you the best of luck.
Had I seen your posting earlier, I would have responded. Stargazers are pretty hardy. Now that they are planted, you can forget about them. Since they are in the ground, they are in a dark cool place and will enjoy wintering there. They need to be at least 4-5 inches deep. Then all they need is good drainage.
One fall I dug up a bunch of lilies for transplanting. I thought I had them all planted till spring melted the snow and I was cleaning the yard. I had neglected to replant about a dozen naked lilies. They bloomed just fine that summer.
I was embarrassingly late in getting some of the lily bulbs this spring, and it showed. I'm sure they'll come up just fine next spring.
You did the right thing! They may be a little smaller next year but they should be just great. the following year.
