I want to save pollen from Landini Hybrid Asiatic Lily, which blooms in early summer, so I can try to hybridize it with a tiger lily which usually blooms late summer, so possibly a month I need to store pollen. How can I do this so it's viable when my other lily is in bloom?
How can I store pollen from a Lily?
My first inclination would be to freeze it; double bagged, no air. You could try to save some in a plain paper envelope too. Keep us posted!
I was torn between fridge or freezer, I'm not exactly sure and the pollen is VERY important so I can't make a mistake and kill it.
So divide the pollen in two and freeze half and refrigerate the rest.... No?
I would say that as long as it stays DRY, the temperature should not be a problem for a few months.
The Millenium Seed Bank in Kew say that most SEEDS double their storage life for each 10°C reduction in temperature (that's 18°F). I would say that pollens wouldn't be too different... DNA and all that...
