CLOSED: What's this Beetle?

Chennai, India

I found these beetles in my garden quite recently. They had been here since just a few months. I am not sure what these beetles are. Can somebody identify them please?

Not beetles, but cockroaches known as domino or seven-spotted cockroaches - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Therea_petiveriana

Thank you very much for the identification. I was quite surprised when I read that it was a cockroach not a beetle. But that's a very interesting finding to share with my friends who are interested in gardening and all garden species.

Please do let me know this cockroach is harmful or useful to the garden. Not that I would chase it off the premises, but am just interested to know.

This species appears to be neutral; they sometimes are kept as 'pets' - http://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/47971-Therea-petiveriana

deadmanswill, we did not have your cockroach in BugFiles, in fact even its family was not represented. I have therefore created a page for Therea petiveriana here: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/7079/

Would you please add your image of the cockroach to that page. If you let me know when you have uploaded your image, I can use it to illustrate its family in the index

Thank you deadmanswill, your image now illustrates the Polyphagidae in our index: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/browse/order.php?bid=53
