This is a "Velvet Ant" - which isn't an ant at all, but a wingless wasp. I couldn't tell you which velvet ant it is, but here is a link to a similar one:

We get them here in Colorado, too, especially up in the mountains. And they do make a noise when disturbed - but you have to have pretty good hearing to pick it up.

Another common name for the same critter is 'cow ant'.
