New to our area & multiplying fast

Covington, GA

Found a hammer-head flat worm;3 of them on my front porch. Never seen it before. I had to look it up. I think it must have migrated here. Lived here all of my 30 years & have never seen one. They were about 14 -16 inches long & solid black from hammer-head to end. I have a black lab that stays out doors. What if he should happen to eat one? Should I be worried? I also have 3 kids. Do these cling on like leaches? What should I learn about these worms? What are the sources?

GeorgiaLily, thank you for telling us about your hammer-head worm, I don't think you have any need to worry about them, They do not cling like leaches and I am sure they would not be harmful if eaten by your dog. There are 4 species in USA, but none are native, all being introduced from South America. This Wikipedia article tells you quite a bit about them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipalium
