I have figs!!!

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

On my young orchid tree seedling, I used the insulator tubing used for pipes around the tree for about 6 feet up. If you use this, be sure to take it off when the freeze warning is over or it will trap moisure and rot the bark. I also used it on plumies and brugs.

Steadycam3 do I have to protect my orchid trees that are in pots? I am moving things into the greenhouse and wasn't sure. I am still in the process of doing it. I hope it stays above freezing tonight.

Also my hibiscus leaves are drooped but the blooms are not wilted is that from the cold? They are almost all in the greenhouse and I will finish putting them in tomorrow. That wind was so cold today.

Yes, Sandy. They will freeze to the ground if not protected. Once they get about 2" diameter trunk, They wont freeze to the ground. They may get a little burn on the tips of branches but that's all. Just need to protect them while they are young.

Ok thanks so much :) I will definitely protect them :)

My tiny baby fig from fall roundup has lost its 2 leaves, despite being under a landscape pot for the hard freeze. Should I wrap it in something?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Just leave it under the pot during freezing weather and take the pot off during sunny days.

Gypsi they lose there leaves for winter :)

: ) well I never saw a fig in winter before. Some of my customers have them, but I do service in spring.

hmmm I lost my scarlet (crimson?) vine from Roundup I think - it was on the shelf in the greenhouse during the great freeze, and MIGHT come back

My orchid tree was near the back of the greenhouse, closest to the wall of the house, so far it is ok.

My broccoli that was not covered had some freeze damage on leaves, the covered with sheet had less, the in greenhouse was nibbled - actually gobbled by something while it was in the warm zone. Whatever bothered it wasn't willing to go up on that COLD shelf. My sedum was in the greenhouse warm zone and the blue sedum is all I have left, although the yellowgreen, also gobbled, looks like it might make a comeback. I moved it to the shelf.

Not sure if I have a cricket or a rat getting in there eating plants. I saw a rat on the fence last night...

So I go to the garden today, and the broccoli that survived the freeze uncovered is missing all its leaves, something ate it. I put a leaf net over it, will see who is tangled up in the morning. If it is a rabbit I expect the hawk will take it, net and all.

Wow Gypsi I know other critters need to eat but wish they would plant their own food. Not right they messed with yours.

: ) well I never saw a fig in winter before. :) Yep they are totally naked :) My neighbors last year had some figs before it had any leaves :)

Don't know what had hit the garden but the net seems to have been a deterrent, no new chomping today. I think it was a rabbit or other rodent. Wasn't low to ground like a cutworm or bug hit. And there EASILY could have been a rat in the greenhouse, may still be one. I have a trap set on one of the trails tonight. I don't want to set a rat trap in the garden, might catch my local mockingbird or something...

My small greenhouse appears to be working too well, my three fig saplings are putting on new leaves. With the temperate weather today and tomorrow, my hope is to get them in the ground, although I haven't decided where yet. Should they be planted in a group? I have never had a big fig tree, for years we had dwarf brown turkey figs, but these are supposed to be full size. I have a Celeste, Turkey, and Mission. All were bought off a clearance rack for a couple dollars each.

I have one brown turkey fig in the ground, and it is struggling in our clay soil. Should I dig it up and replant it now or just add good compost above the soil? Wait till later?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I would leave it there and add compost and mulch.
