Is there a simple way to root cactus..... That is not Optunia?

Get a pot slightly bigger than the echinopsis pups, fil with a cactus mixture, (some good potting soil mixed with sand and a few gravel pebbles) also place some gravel in the bottom portion of the pot before you fill it with the cactus mixture. This will give it the drainage it needs so it won't rot. Wet your mixture so that is is just moist, not real wet.

After you fill your pot or pots up, make a small crater or bowl in the soil and just place the echinopsis pup in it, push some soil gently around it. Leave it like that for a few days in a shaded area. After a few days, mist the pups with a spray bottle just enough that some of the water runs down wetting it on the bottom. Do this every week a d just check for roots by gently trying to lift the pup . If it doesn't come up. It is most likely rooted.

Go to our cactus forum, they are great folks and very knowledgeable , more than I am that's for sure. This method is one I use, I'm sure there are many more and I hope this one helps you.

Good info Gourd. Sharon.

I followed Sharon's advice for the little guys, and it is working! I have not moved them to a permanent home yet but will soon! Thanks again!

I also learned that using a touch of rooting hormone, then letting it dry again before planting, is another approach. I am trying it with a bigger cactus. Wish me luck.

UPDATE

All three pups are successfully rooted and will remain in their "incubation pot" until they get big enough for a pot of their own.

The larger cactus I used the rooting hormone on has finally shown spine growth on top! It was a VERY large cutting that I had some difficulty with and had to start over by recutting the bottom etc. I'm certain use of the rooting hormone, which contains fungicide, saved the cutting! I'm not a cactus killer after all!

Very grateful for the help!

Very addicting. Grateful to say I know addiction, and this one has proven productive and enriching. Definitely a healthy outlet.
