I wanted to collect pine seeds. Under a pine tree I found a pinecone that was faded brown, not a fresh deep brown like newly dropped cones. However some trees drop cones in spring and I got this in summer in Massachusetts so I'm not sure if the cone was a year or two. On the tree are large brown cones and medium green cones. If this cone already went through winter I'd like to directly plant the seeds, if not I need to know if I have to stratify.
How do I know when a pine cone fell?
I'm not sure, but thought I'd "Bump" this, so maybe it can get more views for ya.
I going to guess that a cone laying on the ground with seeds in it is this years cones. There are just too many animals that will eats the seeds if they have been on the ground that long. Most cones I've ever found on the ground are empty of seeds.
