I found this cocoon on my porch. I first noticed these when I drove into my complex today, and saw about 6 of them hanging off of the stop sign. Then walking up to my porch to check on my plants, I noticed one hanging off my porch. I took an entomology class so I'm almost positive it's origin is a wasp, but I've NEVER seen something like this. Any ideas?!
Found a mud/grass cocoon on my porch!
This was constructed by the larva of a moth in the family Psychidae known as an evergreen bagworm (Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis). They can be very serious pests of conifers - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evergreen_bagworm
