Can you tell me what this curious-looking creature is, please?
CLOSED: Bee? Wasp?
I believe it is a black and yellow mud dauber which is a wasp.
This is not a wasp, it is a species of flower/hover fly (family Syrphidae) that is a good wasp mimic. See http://syrphidae.lifedesks.org/node/2813 for another example (it is not your species).
You know, I started to add "Fly?" to my header. Something about it just looked fly-ish. How interesting -- thank you!
As I looked for more examples of wasp-mimicking hover flies, I have also found bee-mimicking ones. Now I'm wondering about what I thought were bumblebees!
