Perhaps a Ghost Swift Moth....Hepialus humuli it is common to most of Europe and Britain.

These are not even caterpillars; they are larvae of a sawfly, maybe in the family Tenthredinidae.

Thanks, found out they are Solomon Seal Sawfly, named after the planmt they have decimated!!!
