Scary bug for identification -has eaten some of my children

Galway, Ireland

He spat them out again because they were too noisy :)

Hi guys, we've had a lot of these fellas coming into the house lately, they all seem to come in the sitting room and we are at a loss as to how they are getting in.

I just wanted an identification so I know if its dangerous or not. I'm in the Republic of Ireland.,

Does it look like a robber fly to you? Thats what my girlfriend thinks.

6 have come into the house in the past 4 days.. do they build nests or what could account for such numbers?

Kind regards,

Enda

This is a wood wasp in the family Siricidae - their larvae develop in dead/dying trees and they will not harm anything in your home (including children...)
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sirex_juvencus for more information.

Thanks very much Flapdoodle.

Any idea why so many of them are coming into the house, the sitting room in particular (we found another one right after posting this thread) ... I think ive blocked up all the holes and such but they just keep appearing

Do you have a wood burning stove or fireplace? Perhaps some of your wood has larva from the wood wasps....and they are hatching out in your wood box.
