I need help identifying this hard to kill insect. It can fly -- it will not get killed by stomping on it (on carpet) -- I found it in my house (Central Texas). What is it?
CLOSED: Please help with identification
You don't want to kill these, they are your friends! They are ensign wasps in the family Evaniidae; their larvae feed on cockroach eggs.
Thank you, Flapdoodle, for identifying this mystery insect for me. In the future if I find any more in my house I will try and catch them and transport them back outside to do their good deed ... Now I wonder how their larvae look like ...?
I don't believe that I've ever seen an image of a larva of these wasps, but i imagine that they would look like pale legless grubs with a distinct head capsule. They spend their entire development inside the cockroach egg case - http://tenerifeislander.hubpages.com/hub/Ensign-Wasps-are-a-Cockroach-killer
