I noticed ants attracted to small round bumps a little smaller than the ants themselves ( small black ants) on the underside of the terminal leaves of one of my beach plums, leaves are curling, but not changing color.
The bumps are round and dark brown in color, and shiny.
I have been knocking back the ants and the the bumps ( insect eggs? ) with repeated applications of Neem Oil solution and picking off some of the leaves.
The beach plum itself seems fairly healthy although it never bushed out like the other one planted at the same time.
Any ideas? I will try to get a picture if this happens again.
thanks
Heather

Need an image; could be scale insects, but some plants also have what are called extra-floral nectaries - structures that give off a sweet substance attractive to ants.
