Welcome to the Fuchsia Palace 2013

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

The other day a fellow was walking by and referred to my garden as, "The Fuchsia Palace". Even though he was half-tanked, I rather like the name.

I'm starting this thread so we can all post our Fuchsia baskets, standards, bedding, topiary, indoor, greenhouse, seedlings, cuttings, etc. Whatever you'd like. Blooms, full plants, combos, leaves, etc. for fun.

Here is my Fuchsia Joan Cooper just starting to bloom which isn't in the plantfiles yet but is reported to be hardy in my zone 8b. I planted it behind a large rock which I was not aware was also used by passer-bys as a seat. Unfortunately the plant has been sat on a few times.

ps. Adding that photos can include botanical gardens, show gardens, nurseries, displays, your neighbour's second-removed cousin's veranda, etc. Basically anything you notice relating to Fuchsia plants and blooms that catch your fancy.

That's an excellent name for a garden. It sounds important and magnificent.

What a shame about your fuchsia. I hope it survives. Beautiful colour combo.

I only just started collecting fuchsia. I saw one on a garden tour that was 6 feet tall. It was a delicate-looking cultivar and I absolutely wanted it. I had to drive out of my area to find one. A month later, the nurseries close by had it - oh well. I love my little Fuchsia Magellanica 'Alba' (pic 1). The second one is Fuchsia 'Hawkshead'. It has an interesting upright growth habit. The branches go up like spears. The third is in a basket. I can't find the tag, but it is stunning, and I want to overwinter it for next year. If you happen to know the name of it, let me know.

I apologize. The photos are a little blurry. It's windy today.

Great collection poinget! You may want to try Brentwood Bay Nurseries near Butchart Gardens which has a large collection of unusual Fuchsia. I don't know what your third one is but love the reddish tints on the leaves which accent the blooms. I've got a small Hawkshead which is just starting to bloom and have read many good things about this cultivar.

I planted a nice 1 gallon F. Chang http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/175982/ and it has been blooming regularly since planting.
Right next to it is a F. 'Maxima' http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/184972/ and I know where it got it's name. The blooms are huge.
I found this really good deal on 1 gallon 3+' Fuchsia pillars for $16 so bought this nice F. 'Papoose' http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/114997/ which is supposed to be quite hardy.

I've recently discovered Brentwood Bay Nurseries. :) Nice people. That's where I got my Hawkshead. And a Sharpitor (pic 1). Then I went to Russell Nurseries and got a Sharpitor Aurea (pic 2). The Sharpitors are not blooming yet, nor producing flower buds.

That stout little fuchsia, Chang, is adorable. I really like the look of it. $16 for Papoose in that size is an incredible deal I think. I saw Papoose in the tiny pots for sale but didn't bite because at the time, I was still looking for Alba. I missed out.

This massive bloom burst today. Fuchsia 'Bella Rosella'. The bud was larger than a tennis ball.

poinget, the Fuchsia pillars were at, of all places, Canadian Tire. I also got 'Santa Claus' which I'll photo later.

Great thread, Mike.
I'll post some photos of mine later.

poinget: that Hawkshead is verrrrry nice.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

Bigger than a tennis ball!? I haven't seen one that big before.

Growin, I have found some sweet deals at department store nurseries and supermarket mini garden centres. Oh, and I recently saw a very nice 'Papoose' 6" tall and 1' wide and it cost 38$ lol. What a difference from what you paid.

This weekend, I bought a little tender fuchsia for experimentation - zone 9. It stays small. I want to see if I can protect it enough for it to survive winter. I read Lilypon's interesting thread where you mentioned overwintering fuchsia in trees with enough mulch, and although I don't have a notch in a tree for it, I hope to keep it warm enough. I'll see.

Please do, JasperDale.

poinget, if you use the same technique as you do for bananas, it should work. http://www.itsnotworkitsgardening.com/2011/11/simple-project.html
The Fuchsia I saw in Spokane were planted deep and covered with mulch/leaves in a mound, protecting the roots and main stem.

JasperDale - bring them on! Lots of room in the Fuchsia Palace.

Here's Fuchsia 'Chillerton Beauty' enjoying some evening rain. I bought it as a one gallon and it went crazy!

Here's that Fuchsia 'Bella Rosella' with a tennis ball. Sorry, dog's ball so not so pretty.

Fantastic growin! What a flower.
And thank you for the link. Fascinating read about the hardy banana. You've given me hope in planting the F 'Gartenmeister Bonstedt' (not that I have one, but I was thinking about it for next year). The lady at the garden centre advised me not to plant it as it would probably die, unless we had an unusually mild winter. Another lady told me to buy anything I want, just put the fuchsia pot in the ground and then remove it and store it when it gets too cold. However, I would prefer the plant have a permanent home outside.

Ok, I'm cheating. The first pic is the fuchsia down the street. I thought it only right it be enjoyed by many. It is 5' high and 6' wide. F. Magellanica Aurea. The second pic is mine. lol. It was outside, in a pot, for weeks, and no deer touched it. It started budding and I planted it, and it immediately got stripped of its buds. All my planted baby fuchsia got haircuts :/

Oh! And I found the tag belonging to my hanging unknown fuchsia, and the very descriptive tag says it's a "Fuchsia". However, I did a little digging into the company and their mail order supply, and I think I may have Marinka.

Marinka makes sense. I think I've got that somewhere and it was starting to bloom similar but wasn't sure as I have trouble reaching or seeing the label.

Love the Fuchsia magellanica 'Aurea'. I didn't think it got that big as the one I've had for years is only a foot high. Moved it this year to a sunnier spot and it's doing better. Oh deer - well, you could say the deer did the pinching of the stems, as JasperDale suggested in the other thread, for you. I'm surprised the abundant rabbits on the island haven't taken to your garden.

A neighbour has a rooftop apartment with a good sized garden. He's had his Fuchsia 'Gartenmeister Bonstedt' outside for 4 years and only takes it in during the worst weather. Someone else mentioned similar. I've got one in the garden and I'll try the banana-type protection this winter.

Here's Fuchsia 'Prince of Orange', which kinda looks like 'Joan Cooper'.

Lovely pastel colours on that one - demure flowers. Draws me right in. Do you have most of your plants in the ground? I'd love to see a garden view.

At the moment, the rabbits aren't an issue on this side of the peninsula. They seem to plague the area around Butchart Gardens. We have a neighbourhood cat that dispatches all manner of critter, including rabbits, raccoons, and birds :/

Yes, let me know how it goes with the Gartenmeister.

Here is a picture of a cutting of an unknown fuchsia. I can't remember how the flowers look except that they are pink, but the leaves were interesting. They were crispy and glossy. They stood out amongst the other fuchsia. It is nicknamed 'Glossy', but no one knows its name, including the supplier, who has it in her garden. I hope I'm growing it right! I'd hate to lose these little guys (he gave me 2) because I am cutting-challenged.

Gosh, growin, maybe we're the only people who like fuchsia on this forum - nay, on Dave's Garden! Maybe people will prove me wrong with a mad surge of fuchsia postings, I don't know. Maybe...

I have most in the ground, except for the ones in the trees and a few containers. We've had such rainy weather that all the plants are a bit flower-less. I did buy a bin of Miracle-Gro Ultra Bloom 15-30-15 which I applied last night. A few days of sun should get them going again. A week or so for the full garden scene.

I bet your pink 'Glossy' is F. Pink Galore. I've added a pic of mine. It's got very glossy leaves, a few more tints of colour on the foliage and very pink blooms.

Anyone can post anything Fuchsia so maybe a few more will join in and maybe JasperDale can add a few too. It'd be great to see some pics of other DG'ers Fuchsia.

The second pic is F. 'Bernisser Hardy' which is supposedly hardy here. A bit of change of colour from F. magellanica.

Giant one...will add names as I find/receive them.

This one is a beaut! :o)

Growin, I think we'll have to keep looking on the glossy. Do you see how Pink Galore's leaves pucker at the veins? Glossy is flat, like your Bernisser Hardy. Very nice close-up of Bernisser. I can see the specular highlights clearly.

And Lilypon, welcome! Super pic. I saw the photo of your pink fuchsia in your moss basket, and although you were disappointed in its size, it was a beautiful plant and obviously well-cared for.

My Sharpitor Aurea is producing flower buds, and I have two others that are about to open as well. When they do, I will post them.

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

Lilypon, that's one big bloom! I'm not sure which one you've got there. For some reason the bloom reminds me of a ruffled prom dress. I bet the moss basket works better with Fuchsia as it holds and releases moisture & humidity that the plants enjoy. I remember they were hard to hang and take down from the moisture weight.

poinget, I think you're right about the leaves being different. It's just what came to mind that I had in the garden. In just one day of sun I'm noticing all my plants are much happier then they have been for the past week or so. I'm hoping to see some more Fuchsia pics, even if they are your neighbour's plants or you see them somewhere else.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

We had mid 90's temp's yesterday so mine aren't looking all that great right now.........

Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

That's some heat. Poor plants, but moreso, poor you! I understand that sort of heat. I used to live in Florida. JasperDale, I hope I didn't bum you out with my teasing, I certainly didn't intend it.

This is F. 'Galadriel'. It has a couple of big buds on it, and I expected to take pictures of them this week. However, I just planted it, and I know what happens when I plant fuchsia. I suspect this will be the last I see of the buds for a while.

Lovely Fuschias folks! The only one I've seen here (on a rare occasion) , that looks somewhat similar to ones posted above is one with quite a bit of red.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

I got permission to photograph my neighbour's Hawkshead fuchsia. It is 7 ft tall! (pic)

I recently met the one who owned the huge F. magellanica aurea. She was thrilled when I told her I shared a photo of it on a gardening forum. She planted it in 1985.

Holy smokes is that one huge (and gorgeous) plant! I had no idea that they could grow that big! :D
