I keep finding these tiny black flies on my ceiling. (I've added the staple in the photo, for scale) They're in the same exact spot as always, but today, worryingly, there are over a HUNDRED of them. (Zoom in on the tiny dots on the second photo I've posted-- and that's not even all of them.) They don't buzz, they don't bite (not as far as I know), they don't flit around. They just sit there, not moving, sometimes not even when you wave them away. I generally just leave them alone, and after a while I will invariably find them all DEAD ON THE FLOOR. It's like some kind of mysterious entomological ritual: like they all come here to die. Anyone know what these things are, and how to get rid of them? They seem harmless, but for all I know they've been sucking my blood in my sleep...
What is this insect?
Although I really cannot tell for certain what sort of fly this is, just be glad that it is not one of the biting midges in the family Ceratopogonidae - they have a vicious bite all out of proportion to their tiny size...
