(just kidding about the eating thing...thought a more interesting subject would generate more views)
but seriously, this thing is a monster. we came across this majestic critter in a semi-hollow tree next to a playground in the woods where I take my children each afternoon. we live in the Raleigh, North Carolina area.
the diameter, including the legs (not just body), was similar to the diameter of a baseball...hardball, not softball. we simply said "sorry to bother you" and went on our way after snapping a few pics to give mom something to dream about.
thanks in advance for helping to ID this incredible specimen!!
What kind of spider did I eat?
This appears to be a dark fishing spider, Dolomedes tenebrosus - http://entomologydiary.typepad.com/home/2012/08/dolomedes-tenebrosus.html
Bite painful but not dangerous.
