Can anyone help me please. From online pictures, I cannot find a distinct difference in adults. I thought I had pirates so have left them alone, but now am concerned I may be protecting the creature that's munching on my veggies!
Help Identify the difference: coon bug vs minute pirate bug
There are some subtle differences – the pale areas on the back (dorsum) of the coon bug (Oxycarenus luctuosus) usually are uniformly white, whereas those on a pirate bug (Orius insidiosus) often are at least partially yellow. Also, the antennae of pirate bugs are paler than those of coon bugs - compare images of coon bugs at http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgg310/5811443340/in/set-72157625716333757 with those of pirate bugs at http://bugguide.net/node/view/557686/bgimage
Finally, if you see any of their ‘babies,’ nymphs of pirate bugs (http://www.store.tlhort.com/p-1666-orius-insidiosus.aspx) are quite different in appearance from those of coon bugs.
