CLOSED: Spider w/ large, intricate funnel (?) web

Fort Myers, FL

This webbing reminds me of those webs I see in North Carolina that are supposedly for some kind of mites, although the outer parts of this web are more like a normal spider web. The spider itself doesn't even look like a spider, but when I blew on the web, it spread out its legs and then immediately went back to being all compact and stealthy. It looks like a dead moth when it's like that.

I can get more pics if a different kind would help. It's challenging because there's so much webbing around it that I can't get any closer to the spider, who is basically in the center.

I'm in Sarasota, FL by the way. Thanks!

Cannot see enough detail to be confident of any i.d., but here is one possibility: http://benkolstad.net/?p=4735

Wow I can always count on you FD! I feel fairly certain that you nailed it mainly because my spider has the same "fork" and the legs are more towards the front of the body. My only hesitation is the webbing... The pics I've seen show the spider in a traditional looking web, and mine is in more of a 3d ball. Thoughts?

I'm a bit puzzled myself, as the web appears atypical for that species, but the spider itself didn't look to me like any of the common species associated with tangled webs - maybe it was just having a bad day... ;-)

Hah, I can definitely accept that answer. The pics I've seen of webs created by spiders under the influence of a variety of narcotics comes to mind :) Although I'm not sure who her dealer is because I know she didn't get her drugs from me! Lol, thanks again!
